Bordeaux at Christmas Time

Cue the twinkling lights, festive treats, and steaming-spiked drinks…it’s Christmas time once again. One of the best places to celebrate the holiday season is inside the many picture-perfect Christmas markets throughout Europe. While living in Bordeaux, France this past year, I did exactly that. Straight from the pages of a story-book is the Marché de Noël de Bordeaux. Stalls full of meats, cheeses, decorative Christmas cookies, and toys for the kids line the Allées de Tourny in the heart of the city.

A walk through the market stalls is not complete without a hot glass of Vin Chaud or hot wine. The traditional recipe calls for red wine stewed with warm cooking spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and star anise. White wine steeped with white raisins and ginger spice is also a holiday favorite.

The entire city is decked out in white lights and pine needle garlands, wreathes, and trees. While the days are becoming a little colder, the warmth of the city and its people certainly keep you warm.

I sure miss my life in Bordeaux. The city’s charm grew tenfold during the Christmas season. While there’s no place like home for the holidays, a part of me wishes I was able to relive the magic this time of year brings to this beautiful French city.
